The Beauty of Marquetry and Parquetry

February 2025 - June 2025

This past exhibition explored the intricate woodworking techniques of marquetry and parquetry. Marquetry is created by cutting wood veneer into shapes and assembling the pieces to form an image, while parquetry uses pieces of wood arranged in simple or complex geometric patterns. Both techniques are highly labor-intensive and require exceptional precision and skill.

Oshkosh’s thriving lumber industry, which began in the mid-1800s, helped establish the city as a center for skilled woodworkers. Local makers produced a wide range of furniture, decorative objects, and folk art using these detailed techniques.

Featuring works from the Oshkosh Public Museum collection, the exhibition highlighted the craftsmanship of two local artisans: the Kitz family and Oliver Guhl.
