PROGRAMS and ACTIVITIES

BADGER WOOD SHOP
The Badger Wood Shop and Finishing Room is located in the North Building. User fee is
$1.00/$1.50 Equipment in the Wood Shop includes:

  • Band saw, scroll saw, radial arm saw, table saw and miter saw
  • Orbital sander, disc belt sander and spindle sander
  • Lathe
  • Joiner
  • Bench grinder
  • Drill press
  • Planer
  • Router

Individuals 50-years plus are welcome. The Wood Shop is perfect for those people
making projects, but without the tools and space to do so. It is also beneficial because a
Wood Shop supervisor is available to advise on a project. Bird carving classes are also
available with Richard Christensen. Equipment training is provided. For more information, Wood Shop
hours, or a personal tour, please call the information desk at 232-5300.

COMPUTER PROGRAM
The Computer Lab located in the South Building, features Internet service, computers
for individual usage, a computer reference library where computer classes are offered
throughout the year and volunteers instruct interested participants on basic computer
skills, Internet usage, computer selection, office systems, photography and photo editing,
etc. The lab is open on Tuesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Thursday from 1:45 p.m.
until 3:45p.m. Anyone age 50 and above may use the lab during this time and volunteer
trainers will be there to assist with special needs and questions. Cost is $1.00 for
residents, $2.00 for non-residents.

A program, called Computer Talk, meets every Tuesday afternoon from 1:45 p.m. until
3:45 p.m. This program is open to individuals to ask questions, share ideas, website
addresses, and enhance computer skills; charge for this program is $1.00/$2.00. For
computer class enrollment information, contact information desk at 232-5300.

Information Programs presented throughout the year may include financial
programs, legal assistance/counseling, wellness/health programs, medical information,
self-care programs, and more. Please refer to the monthly publication, "The Current",
for current listings or call the Center at 232-5300.

CREATIVE EXPRESSIONS

CRAFT AND ART CLASSES
User fee: $1.00/$1.50

  • Watercolor Painting with Sue Lefeber and Sue Spanbauer are available. For
    more information, refer to the current issue of Senior Doings for dates and times or call
    the 232-5300. An instructor fee applies.

  • Painting Labs – Interested painters gather for Watercolor, Acrylics and Oil
    Painting, on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon.

  • Ceramics is offered on Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 6 p.m. until 8
    p.m. from September through July. Participants must bring their own greenware,
    brushes and paints. Instructor Linda Baerwald provides guidance and assists with
    painting techniques. The Center has a kiln.

  • Basket Weaving classes are offered monthly on Mondays beginning at 9 a.m.
    from September through June. Every participant takes home a completed basket.
    JoAnn Lewis provides hands-on instruction.

  • Knitting and Crocheting is offered Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. from
    September through May. Learn basic techniques, enhance acquired skills and/or
    exchange patterns. Everyone is welcome to attend, including beginners. User fee is $.50
    per time.

LANGUAGE CLASSES:
Interested participants are invited to join the group at any time. User fee: $1.00/$1.50.

  • Spanish Class, with instructor Ann Cider, meets year-round each Thursday from
    10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Learn how to say simple phrases. Interested
    participants are invited to join the group at any time.

  • Advanced French class with instructor Severin Swanson meets year-round every
    Thursday from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Improve your vocabulary and enhance your
    grammar. Interested participants are invited to join the group at any time.

WRITING CLASSES: User fee: $1.00/$1.50

  • Creative Writing meets every Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. from September
    through May. Participants write stories about their lives, family, friends or
    cherished memories and share these stories with participants. Interested
    participants are invited to join the group at any time.

RECREATION AND GAMES
User fee: $.25

Card playing opportunities are available every day at the Center. The center also has a
variety of games available for use. There are also organized card games during the week.

  • Monday: Canasta from 1 until 4 p.m. | Bingo - 2:45 p.m.

  • Tuesday: Cribbage from 9 a.m. until noon

  • Wednesday: Sheepshead and Cribbage from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

  • Thursday: Pinochle from 9 a.m. until 12 noon.

  • Friday: Open Bridge from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
    (Partners are not required. All bridge players welcome.)

A regulation size Pool table is located at the North building and is available during the
regular hours of operation for that building—M-Th 6:45 a.m-2:45 p.m., and Fri. 6:45 -
11:45 a.m.

PERFORMING AND OUTREACH GROUPS:

  • Wisconsin Warmers is an outreach program that contributes hand-made
    blankets, quilts, book bags, and so on to children and adults in our community.
    Non-profit agencies benefit from these donations. An extension of this program
    is reaching out to children, who need to warm their hands and heads during
    Wisconsin’s cold winter months. Volunteers make hats, mittens and scarves for
    children in area schools. This group meets at the North Building, Thursdays from 1:00
    until 3:00 p.m. Volunteer, Peggy Philippi coordinates this group.

SPECIAL MONTHLY PROGRAMS:

  • Birthday and Bingo: On the third Thursday of each month, 1:00-3 p.m.,,
    everyone 50 + is invited to celebrate the birthdays of individuals in attendance. Each
    birthday guest receives a gift. Everyone in attendance enjoys birthday cake and ice
    cream. Bingo prizes are donated by the Friends of the Oshkosh Seniors Center.
    Reservations for lunch are required.
    Call the Winnebago County Nutrition Program at 725-6323 or 1-800- 631-2791 for a reservation.

  • A newsletter, "The Current" is published monthly. The newsletter features
    information on programs and activities offered at the Center, health and wellness
    information, volunteer opportunities, current trips being offered by Winnebago
    Seniors Tours and pertinent information that relates to issues involving seniors in
    our community. Newsletters are available at no charge at both Center facilities,
    community churches, grocery stores, pharmacies and so on. Friends members
    receive the newsletter in the mail, as a benefit of the membership.

  • Piano Concerts are held at least once a month in the great room, featuring local
    musicians. Everyone is welcome. No charge---donations will be accepted.
    Please refer to the Senior Doings for the date and time.

  • Soup's On is a chance to enjoy delicious soup, the last Thursday of the month, 11:30
    a.m.-1:00 p.m., prepared by volunteers with culinary experience. Donations
    accepted. Refer to "The Current" for time and location or call the Center at 232-5300.

YEARLY PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES:

  • Winter Games: A variety of activities, including card bingo, bowling,
    shuffleboard, snowball toss, baggo, plus a chili lunch and sundae bar is held in
    January. The Oshkosh Recreation Department, Associated Bank and the
    Oshkosh Seniors Center co-sponsor this event. Read the Senior Doings newsletter
    for details, dates and times.

  • Summer Games: A variety of events, including a baseball throw, card games,
    basketball free throw, golf, lawn dice, plus a picnic lunch welcomes seniors 50 +.
    The Oshkosh Recreation Department, Associated Bank, and the Oshkosh Seniors
    Center sponsor this event. Read the Senior Doings newsletter for details, dates
    and times.

  • Special Holiday Programs: The Oshkosh Seniors Center celebrates many major
    holidays with grand parties including food and entertainment. Such celebrations
    include Christmas, Halloween, Older Americans Month, St. Patrick’s Day, Veteran’s
    Day.

QUARTERLY PROGRAMS:

  • Women’s Wellness Retreat—a chance for women to relax and renew in mind, body and spirit. Topics include physical wellness, emotional wellness, spiritual wellness, and more.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS:
The Oshkosh Seniors Center offers a variety of informational programs that focus on the needs of seniors in our community. Selected programs target financial and independent security while others target maintaining independent living and dealing with life transitions.

NUTRITION SITE:
The Center hosts a mealsite sponsored by the Winnebago County Nutrition Program for older adults at 11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. The Older Americans Act funds this program.

The suggested donation for a meal is $2.75, however whatever you can afford is graciously accepted.

Call the Winnebago County Nutrition Program at 725-6323 or 1- 800-631-2791 for reservations and cancellations no later than 12:30 p.m. the day before.

If you need a ride, a cab service is available for a charge of $1.00 if you eat lunch at the Center.
